Children in China

Helping Mom. A boy helps his mother wash clothes on the sidewalk. (photo by Lyle)

Noodle Time.  A boy eats outside a shop. (photo by Aaron).

A Movie Star? Our "kid", Alyssa, draws a crowd. On this day in Beijing at the Forbidden Palace,
she had her picture taken 10 times. Here she exchanges addresses with a Chinese family after
she had her picture taken with the girl in blue. Our friend Zhou says Aaron and Alyssa
are movie stars to the Chinese people. (photo by Lyle)

Four at Play. On a return trip to the kindergarten we had visited earlier, Alyssa and Lyle
played and got numerous pictures. (photo by Lyle)

All Boy. Alyssa holds a boy at the kindergarten playground. (photo by Lyle)

Book Worm. At the kindergarten playground, this girl
was busy reading a book. (photo by Lyle)

Four More at Play. Although the boys outnumbered the girls at this
playground,  it is the other way around on the university campus. (photo by Lyle)

With Nai Nai? Many young children spend their day with
their nai nai (grandmother) or ye ye (grandfather).

Babe in a Basket. This precious little one is routinely "parked" in the
courtyard at the bottom of the steps to our apartment while nai nai
(grandmother) worked nearby. (photo by Gwen)

Color Coordinated. Hundreds of elementary school children crossed the bridge outside our window
one morning. They held hands and came in groups. Each group wore a different colored uniform,
with at least a dozen colors. When they returned, they were no longer separated by color. (photo by ?)

Roadside Play. Two boys amuse themselves with a piece of construction debris. China is a
photographer's paradise, especially a photographer who likes to "shoot children." They are everywhere,
and they are beautiful, full of life and fun-loving. Almost all of them greet us with "Hello" and
then "How are you?"  They fascinate us, and we fascinate them. (photo by Lyle)
