December 12, 2001 Church Council Meeting Minutes

  Those present: John Top, Craig Bass, Gareth Hamen, Pastor John, Roy Wiersma, Dennis Strait and Lynn Vetter.  Not Present:  Kay Zimiga, Ernie Karst, Lisa Janssen and Sherwin DeKam.
  John opened the meeting with Gareth giving devotions. Roy will do devotions for our January meeting. Lynn gave the Secretary's report. Craig made the motion to approve as read. Gareth seconded. Motion carried. Gareth read the Treasurer's report. Craig made the motion to approve. Roy seconded. Motion carried.
  Pastor John gave his report. He would like to welcome all of us to visit the State Penitentiary for their worship service on each and every Thursday. He also had a handout for the "Age of All ELCA Clergy Serving Congregations".  It illustrated almost half of the pastors were from 45-54 years old, which indicated in the next 20 years congregations will be needing pastors and asked all to listen for the call to serve as a pastor. He also stated to encourage all young people into this field. He announced the Sunday School Christmas Program will be December 16th at 7:30 p.m., Advent Service December 19th at 7:00 p.m., Christmas Eve Candlelight Eucharist December 24th at 7:00 p.m., and the Zimiga-Nielsen wedding December 31st at 5:00 p.m.  Pastor John stated he will be on vacation for the Sunday of January 6th, and that a lay pastor will be contacted to fill in if possible.
  John Top reported for the Property Committee.  5 windows have been replaced in the Parsonage. Some minor work to be done yet, but should be complete by December 15th.  Roy stated the railing for the garage steps has been purchased.   Roy and Dennis to install to complete this.
  Also announced that the youth will be caroling in Castlewood on December 19th at 5:00 and will have supper.  Grades 3 - 12 will be making Christmas Cards for the prisoners.

OLD BUSINESS:
  John wanted to thank everyone who helped with the Thanksgiving Dinner, especially Lynn Borer for the work he had done, the free will offering as $1,035.71, with the cost approximately $500.00.
  The Church Council will start work on the Church Directory in early 2002.  Anyone wanting to assist in this is asked to contact a Church Council Member.

NEW BUSINESS:
  The ALC Church TV cable broadcast was also discussed. We are currently holding $391.00 towards the continuing of this missionary work. Chuck Juntti will check into the final cost. John Mickey has volunteered to set up the manger scene outside the Church.
  The Annual Meeting date has been set for January 20, 2002 at 10:15 a.m.  All invited to attend.  Topics will include 2002 budget, replacing Church Council members, siding on the parsonage, etc.
  The Church Council worked on the ALC 2002 Budget which will continue into our meeting in January. Dennis made the motion to adjourn. Roy seconded.  Motion carried.  The Council closed with the Lord's Prayer.

Memorial List items:  These items are currently on our Memorial List:  the Building Fund, pew pads, pew Bibles, LBW hymnals, WOV hymnals, special Orders of Worship, Altar/Communion linens, Communion trays (2), Baptism chests, "Reserved" pew signs, stand for Memorial book, flower/multifunctional stands, eternal light oil candle, acolyte crosses and seasonal cinctures (ropes).  If you have additional ideas for the list, tell Pastor or a Council member.  We are very grateful for each memorial gift.
